Tarot card meaning: upright and reversed, in love, work and money.

The Devil tarot card, from A Little Witchy's painted deck
On our card, a grinning horned figure with goat legs and a velvet robe lounges on a golden pedestal, holding up a glowing lantern. Two laughing people sit at its feet, loosely tied with golden ribbons, among bowls of coins, grapes, candles and sweets.

What The Devil means

Look closely: the chains on the Devil card are loose enough to slip off, and that's the whole joke. This is the habit that owns you a little, like the scroll, the snooze, the ex you still check up on. Fun is fine, stuck is the problem.

The Devil, card fifteen, has a scary name and a practical message: it's about attachment, temptation and the habits that hold us more than we hold them. In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck two people are chained to the Devil's pedestal, but the chains hang loose enough to lift off, so the trap is mostly one we've agreed to. In daily life it's the late-night delivery order on repeat, the online cart that keeps refilling, or the dynamic you keep going back to even though it leaves you drained.

The Devil reversed

The chains are coming off. You've spotted the pattern, and spotting it is most of the work.

Reversed, the Devil is often good news, because you're noticing the hold something has on you and starting to loosen it. Telling one trusted person about it usually takes away half its power.

In love, work and money

Love

Strong attraction that's hard to resist, sometimes with a side of jealousy. Enjoy the chemistry, but check that you're staying because you want to.

Work

Watch for golden handcuffs, a job you stay in only for the paycheck or the title. Ask yourself what you'd do if money weren't the only thing keeping you there.

Money

Shopping as a mood fix is the trap here. When a purchase feels urgent, leave it in the cart overnight.

Yes or no?

Leans no. the Devil warns that something isn't as freeing as it looks, so think twice before saying yes to whatever's tempting you.
